Gadamer I 255 Life/Paul Graf Yorck/Gadamer: Husserl simply has no idea of the connection between the concept of [life] and the metaphysical tradition, especially with speculative idealism. At this point, the unfortunately very fragmentary estate of Count Yorck(1), published in 1956, becomes of surprising current significance. The analysis of liveliness, which is the starting point for Count Yorck, as speculative as it sounds, nevertheless incorporates the scientific way of thinking of the century - explicitly Darwin's concept of life. Life is self-assertion. That is the basis. The structure of liveliness consists in being judgement, i.e. to assert oneself as a unit in the division and structuring of oneself. But judgement is also proved to be the essence of self-consciousness, because even if it is always directed into self and other, it consists - as a living thing - in the play and contradiction of its constitutive factors. For Gadamer I 256 it applies, just as to all life that it is a test, i.e. an experiment. "Spontaneity and dependence are the basic characters of consciousness, constitutive in the area of somatic as well as psychic articulation, as neither seeing and physical sensation nor imagination, wanting or feeling would exist without representationalism"(2).
